FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
Review a list of questions we have received from clients.
Why should I consider a solar patio instead of a rooftop solar system?
No panels on your roof. Add more living area to your house. Savings from solar can pay for your new luxury patio. Improve your home's value. Receive the ITC 30% credit on complete project. Avoid roofing issues. Get solar without roof space.
What do you mean I can get a patio basically for free?
If you were to purchase a patio, and stay with the electric company, you would have to come up with around $8,000 or finance it for $60 per month. That is on top of your monthly electric bill. If you were to finance a solar patio (solar+patio), your monthly payments, after tax credit, could match your existing electric bill. So in theory, getting a new patio through the solar patio purchase, you are not coming up with a one-time/monthly out-of-pocket cost for a patio.
Why is your solar patio cost higher than rooftop?
Our solar patios are the combination of standard pricing for solar rooftop, plus the cost of a luxury patio. Our price, for the solar part, is exactly the same for a rooftop solar system featuring high quality solar panels and equipment (not offshore). Our price for a water-tight lifetime warranty patio, is the same direct from manufacturer.
Can I put solar panels on my existing wood patio or Alumawood patio?
Unfortunately because of weight and wind load, those structures would not get permitted. Additionally, those structures are not watertight and do not offer a lifetime warranty. Saving a little money is not worth risking the safety of a homeowner and their family. The savings from a solar patio, along with no panels on the roof, still makes sense to replace your existing patio, even if its new. If your existing patio is old, then there is an advantage to replace your seasonal patio that will need to be replaced in the future anyways. Demolition may, or may not, be included in an estimate.
Who is the company behind your patio structures?
Our patio product is manufactured by a company that has made luxury patios and sunrooms for over 69 years. They have received multiple awards and acquired all applicable certifications. They are one of the few patio manufacturers that offer a lifetime warranty on their product.
What are bifacial solar panels?
Most solar panels today are single-sided, with a maximum amount of output coming from just one side. Our panels are double sided. So depending on reflection underneath, our panel output can range from 5% - 50% more power than a mono panel. Our solar patio product, because double-sided cells, allows for multiple sources of direct and reflective exposure from the sun.
What brand of solar panels do you use?
We use 2 brands of bifacial solar panels made by companies located in the USA. They have done some of the largest solar installation in the country. One company has completed a 5000 panel system for the state of New York. The other has been recognized as completing the largest solar install in the world using bifacial panels.
Are your panels made in the USA?
Our main panel supplier has received ARRA compliance (made in USA certification) and are made in the state of New York. Our other supplier is headquartered in Silicon Valley with their panel partially manufactured at their CA facility.
How does solar patio output compare to rooftop output?
Our solar patios, in testing and real-world, generates more output per square feet than any rooftop system. Our 10 panel bifacial solar patio will generate more power than have to put 14 mono panels on your roof.
What if I don't have enough patio area space to offset 100% of my bill?
We can do a combination of solar patio+rooftop or a combination of two separate patio structures at different places of your property.
What if I don't want it attached to a house , but would like a stand-alone like a gazebo?
We can do this type of structure. The cost is slightly more for extra post/footings, and trenching to get electrical service to the desired installation area.
Can I use low cost panels or single sided panels instead to save cost?
After multiple installations, we are confident in our premium solar panel at a fair price. Some providers have tried using offshore bifacials and single sided panels, only to call us back after receiving complaints from customers. Not only is our panels output at a higher rate, but offer a superior look. If you install a single-sided panel into a patio structure, you will not only get less power but will also see plastic underside without pass-thru.
What about engineering and permitting?
We provide engineering services for electrical, structural and includes stamps. We have 3 engineering firms that can provide engineering across the entire US. We have completed permitting in some of the toughest cities in the country, so we are confident we can get your permitting done. Engineering and permitting is included in the project cost.
Who does the patio install?
We contract with patio companies that have a history of doing patios. They also get specialize training on the our solar patio product. Our contractors are licensed and insured and include a workmanship warranty.
Will I need to re-roof, or do roof repairs, before we install the patio?
In most cases, installers will not be touching your roof. The maybe cases, we have to work with the edge of your roof line, but will not effect your entire roof.
Who will do the concrete slab work or install post footings?
The patio company will be responsible for completing any concrete work before construction of the solar patio. There will be separate quote and not included in our standard solar patio estimate. The charge for concrete slab with be local market prices.
Can I add panels or more patio later?
Yes. You can purchase a smaller system now, and upgrade to a larger system later. Our patio framing is modular, so we can simply add more frames to the system. There will be more post, concrete and permitting that will need to worked on for the additional structure. This feature to add more panels, is a great feature if you are looking to increase electricity usage in the future or can only afford a smaller system now, with the hopes of adding more later.
What warranties are included?
Patio – Lifetime warranty. Solar Panels – 25 year warranty. Solar workmanship – 5 to10 Years. Patio workmanship – 5 to 10 years.
Are solar patios safe?
Yes. We engineer for fire, weight, wind, snow, electrical and water safety. Both the patio and solar panels have received multiple certifications including UL certification. Your local building department includes an pre-install engineering inspection, as well as, a final site inspection.
Why does sometimes the panel count need to rounded up or down to even numbers or count of 3s?
Our patios come in 2 to 3 deep panel kits to make a rectangle patio.. For example 2 deep by 5 wide. Solar patios look best when panels are inserted in all the open frames.
Can I get open patio frames or something other than solar panels?
Yes. We can leave the part frame section open for air flow or insert clear glass, tinted glass or decorative custom glass.
How do you estimate the size of solar patio I need?
First we look at you electric bill and consult with you about how much offset you prefer. We then take measurements of the available patio area we can use to install a solar patio to match your desired electric bill offset.
What about the concrete under the solar patio?
Included in our estimate, we provide an optional service to coat you concrete with a non-slip, mildew resistant, water sealer. This will extend the life of your concrete and improve the appearance. It will also improve reflection to the underside of the solar patio to generate more electricity and save your more money.
Will I see wires or electrical equipment?
We do our best to conceal all wires and materials, so you cannot see them on the patio structure. With any solar installation, including rooftop, you will see wires, conduit and electrical boxes on the side of the house.
Can I get electrical outlets and fans added to the patio?
Yes. However, we do not offer these add-ons PRIOR to installation of the solar patio. These are available post-install. An electrician can install conduit for electrical outlets and ceiling fans anytime to a patio.
Can I decide on the post?
Yes. The options for post is exactly the same for a regular patio. There will be engineering considerations, but you can decide which post you want. You can decide from our selection or point us to a source to the one you want. Post selection range from simple square to custom brick.
What colors are available for the patio?
Your representative can provide you a color chart or swatch. All colors are included at the same price. Standard colors include white and light brown.
What is the difference between your luxury patio and a regular patio?
Our luxury patios are water-tight sealed solar panel top. Other patios are open lattice with water and snow coming through. Our patios are also made for year round enjoyment. Even if it raining or snowing, you can stiull sit underneath your patio. Because of the closed top, your outdoor furniture will last longer and be more comfortable than a patio that lets the elements damage your outdoor setting. Most patios made out of wood or thin aluminum won't last as long as our our thick powder-coated patios.
Can you make a solar sunroom?
Yes. Our sunrooms range in prices and include our luxury patio solar panel top. Output per panel is reduced because of underside exposure, but we will add extra panels to make up for loss reflection.
What if I want to get another quote from another solar patio installer?
Most solar companies prefer not to do construction type projects, and patio companies prefer not to do solar projects. There is a very limited supply of solar patio installers. We are specialist in solar patios and the only company offering nationwide dealerships Even in the rare case, there is a company in your area , they wouldn’t be able to match our price and quality.
Why isn't there more solar patios out there?
Solar patios are a new product even though there have been hundreds of installs across the USA. Recent technical developments in panel technology now allows solar patio to be installed on a small footprint without making a very large patio, just to offset your bill.
